Thank You

I was watching YouTube videos by Ray Stevens yesterday. If you've never heard and/or seen him before, you MUST check him out. He has a lot of really good, meaningful songs. Some of them are really funny too. Anyways, this particular one caught my attention and I think it says it all...

So, THANK YOU to all those who serve! I wish I told you more often how much I appreciate what you do. But, I'm telling you now - thank you...

Patriotic Tribute

It's not too often that you hear and/or see a patriotic tribute anymore. I saw this one on a friend's Facebook page and thought I'd share...

Engaged in Mystery...

So Josh and I recently entered a contest for a local radio station. The contest was to submit a story or video telling how you got engaged. We decided to submit a video. We were in a creative mood so we made the story into a 1950's detective type story. I figured I'd share it on my blog so you all could see. I hope you enjoy it! Let me know what you think.

The Few, The Proud...

... the Marines. Today is their 234th birthday and on this day I just want to say happy birthday to all Marines (I would say past and present, but once a Marine always a Marine). A huge thank you to each and every one of you for all of the sacrifices that you make for our freedom and for your willingness to stand up and fight for our country.

I'm so privileged to be married to a Marine - the finest man that I know. I'm so thankful for his willingness to serve our country and do everything that he's called to do in order to ensure that we live in a free nation. I'm also privileged to have a father who served in the Corps and in Vietnam. Thanks to both of these amazing men in my life for showing me what it means to truly be proud to be an American.

But on this 234th birthday, if you know a Marine or see one on the streets, take a minute to thank them for all that they do and to wish them a happy birthday. It's because of them that we live in the free nation that we do today.

Sometimes Forgotten

I saw this video on YouTube today and I just had to post it. So many times we only hear the horrible things about war and we don't hear what good our men and women are doing and how they're helping others. Sometimes we simply forget the good things and choose to look at the bad. This video highlights the good things that are going on - how others are being helped by our country's men and women who have volunteered to serve us. They deserve our gratitude, not our criticism!

Hard to Believe

It's hard to believe that this past Sunday (8/9/09) marked our one year anniversary! The year has truly flown by, but it sure has been a wonderful blessing. Both of us have learned a lot throughout this year and have grown closer to each other and our love for each other has grown.

It seems like just yesterday though, that we just met...

... but at the same time, it seems like we've known each other and been together forever.

It also seems like just yesterday that I was going to my first Marine Corps Ball...

... and was surprised as Josh "popped the big question". But then again, it seems like forever ago at times as well.

Then, it also seems like just yesterday that we said our "I do's" and became Mr. and Mrs....

... but, yet, that was over a year ago now.

The saying goes "time flies when you're having fun" and boy is it right. This past year of married life sure has flown by, but it's been a lot of fun. I can honestly say that being married to my best friend was always something that I dreamed of, and it has gone way past my hopes and dreams and been better than I could have ever imagined.

All that I can say now is I look forward to many more years of happiness together (Lord willing) and many more anniversaries celebrated with Josh!

A Rant Worth Reading...

So my mother in law sent this to me. She read it in a newsletter for a Marine Corps magazine (Sgt Grit). It's a Marine's "ranting", but well worth reading. This young Marine is serving his third tour of duty in Iraq and is writing his perspective on recent occurences...

"Okay, I need to rant.

I was just watching the news, and I caught part of a report on Michael Jackson. As we all know, Jackson died the other day. He was an Entertainer who performed for decades. He made millions, he spent millions, and he did a lot of things that make him a villain to many people. I understand that his death would affect a lot of people, and I respect those people who mourn his death, but that isn't the point of my rant.

Why is it that when ONE man dies, the whole of America loses their minds with grief. When a man dies whose only contribution to the Country was to ENTERTAIN people, the American people find the need to flock to a memorial in Hollywood, and even Congress sees the need to hold a "moment of silence" for his passing?
Am I missing something here? ONE man dies, and all of a sudden he's a freaking martyr because he entertained us for a few decades?

What about all those SOLDIERS who have died to give us freedom? All those soldiers who, knowing that they would be asked to fight in a war, still raised their hands and swore to defend the Constitution and the United States of America. Where is their moment of silence?

Where are the people flocking to their graves or memorials and mourning over them because they made the ultimate sacrifice? Why is it when a soldier dies, there are more people saying "good riddance," and "thank God for IEDs?" When did this country become so calloused to the sacrifice of GOOD MEN and WOMEN, that they can arbitrarily blow off their deaths, and instead, throw themselves into mourning for a "Pop Icon?"

I think that if they are going to hold a moment of silence IN CONGRESS for Michael Jackson, they need to hold a moment of silence for every service member killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. They need to PUBLICLY recognize every life that has been lost so that the American people can live their callous little lives in the luxury and freedom that WE, those that are living and those that have gone on, have provided for them. But, wait, that would take too much time, because there have been so many willing to make that sacrifice. After all, we will never make millions of dollars. We will never star in movies, or write hit songs that the world will listen too. We only shed our blood, sweat and tears so that people can enjoy what they have.

Sorry if I have offended, but I needed to say it.

Remember these five words the next time you think of someone who is serving in the military;"So that others may live...

- Isaac"

So true... Where is their respect? Where is their moment of silence in Congress? Where is our gratitude for them?.... Maybe we as Americans need to start thanking them just a little bit more - no make that a WHOLE lot more!

JT09

Javelin Thrust 2009 (JT09) was a huge success! The Marines of Det 2 Allentown completed their mission, directly aiding in the overall fulfilment of the operation. Comm Company maintained their systems with nearly 100% up-time and quickly resolved any and all issues that arose. We spent the "down time" providing and receiving training on our equipment and the equipment of the other communications company that was present. Marines received instruction on proper radio procedures and customs, set-up and operation of the RSAM and other switchboard related hardware, and the set-up, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the Support Wide Area Network (SWAN) satellite suite.

During the operation, we had the opportunity to qualify for the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP) grey belt, learn proper foot patrol techniques and operations, take an instructional course on IED recognition and attack prevention, and also receive our Combat Life-Savers' Certifications (CLS).

After completion of the operation, Marines received improvised Professional Military Education (PME) on a variety of subjects including future weaponry and warfare, Operational Risk Management (ORM), and wilderness safety.

Time Well Spent...

Since Josh is gone away for Annual Training with the Marines for two weeks, I have had a lot of time alone. I knew from before he even left that my time without him would be what I made it to be - I could either spend the time sitting around moping because my husband wasn't home or I could spend the time finding things to do, spending time with people, and passing the time away quickly. I chose the latter.

It hardly seems possible that I've been "husbandless" for eleven days already (it'll have been 16 days by the time he comes home). I decided to do a lot of things to keep busy while he was gone, so that the time would go by fast. It has gone at a decent pace (rather quickly), though at times it has seemed to move slowly also.

The first week he was gone seemed like a week of re-connecting. He left on Thursday June 11th. On Friday I worked. On Saturday I took my Praxis exams in the morning, and then in the afternoon I reconnected with a friend, Katie, who I hadn't seen in at least seven months. It was definitely nice to see her again! On Sunday I spent time at my in-laws house and then spent the evening with Jen, my sister in law. It was definitely nice to hang out with her and have some "girl time". That Monday I spent by myself, cleaning and doing things around the house. That Tuesday I reconnected with another friend, Bethany, who I also hadn't seen in about six months. That Wednesday I spent the evening at my in-laws house also. That was my first week while Josh was gone, a pretty packed week indeed. It flew by and I feel as if I got a lot accomplished and had fun as well.

The second week (which we're only midway through) has also been rather busy. I headed up to my parents house for the rest of the time that Josh will be away. When it's all said and done, I will have spent 9 days up here. The time here has also been busy - my niece K's 5th birthday party, graduation parties, shopping with my mom, church, spending time with family, and much more. There will only be more to come in the rest of the week - babysitting my niece and nephew, spending time with friends and family, a movie night with some friends from church, a possibly baseball game, and other things as well.

Though these weeks have been busy since Josh was gone, I consider it to have been time well spent. I could have spent the time moping around and being depressed that I missed Josh (which I definitely do miss him). But instead I spent the time busy and having fun with people I love. I consider these two weeks to be time well spent instead of time well wasted.

By the way, I'll post some pictures of the two weeks on here once I'm home. That way you can see some of the things that I've been doing these past two weeks.

The Man I Love...

Yes, he's the man I love and the man I miss.
He's gone away for two weeks for training with the Marines.
I'm praising God though that it's only two weeks and not a long deployment.
The sound of his voice and the sight of his smile makes my days now.

It is true that "distance makes the heart grow fonder".
It makes you love and appreciate a person more for who they are.
It makes you realize just how much they mean to you.
I love him so much - even more today than I did yesterday!
I thank God for him and thank him for serving our country so willingly!
He's the man I love... and I could never get anyone better!

A Settled Dispute

A Soldier, a Sailor, an Airman and a Marine got into an argument one night about which service was the best (go figure, right?). The arguing became so heated that none of the four servicemen saw the truck that was barreling down the road towards them. The driver failed to see them, and all four of them were killed instantly.

Soon, the servicemen found themselves at the Pearly Gates of Heaven. There they met with Saint Peter, and, figuring that he would be a good source of Ultimate Truth and Total Honesty, asked of Peter: "Saint Peter, which branch of the United States Armed Forces is the best?" Saint Peter replied, "I can't answer that. However I will ask God what he thinks the next time I see Him. Meanwhile, thank you for your service on Earth, and welcome to Heaven."

Some time later, the four servicemen see Saint Peter and remind him of the question they had asked him when first entering Heaven. The men asked Saint Peter if he was able to find the answer. Suddenly, a sparkling white dove lands on Peter's shoulder. In the dove's beak is a note glistening with golden dust. Saint Peter says, "Gentlemen, here is your answer from The Boss. Let's see what He has to say." Peter opens the note, and trumpets blare, golden dust drifts in the air, harps play crescendos, and Saint Peter reads the note aloud to the Servicemen:

MEMORANDUM
FROM: The Almighty One
TO: Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines
SUBJ: Which Military Service Is The Best

1. Gentlemen, all branches of the United States Armed Forces are honorable and noble. Each serves America well, and with distinction. Being a Serviceman in the United States Military represents a special calling, which warrants special respect, tribute, and dedication.

2. Be proud of that!

God, USMC (retired)

It's Been Awhile...

Wow! It's been awhile since I posted an update, well a week to be exact. But after posting nearly every day a week is a long time. I guess I have a reason for not posting, considering I didn't really have good internet access for a few days and didn't have much time. Oh well, so what have I been up to? What's on my mind...
______________________________________

Last Thursday I took my wonderful husband to his Marine Corps unit and dropped him off. He and five other Marines were headed out to Oregon for some training on some new equipment that they have recently gotten. He left Thursday afternoon and returned back to PA on Monday afternoon. So, I was without him for four days.... and I definitely missed him.

The four days weren't bad though because after I dropped Josh off at his unit, I went up to my hometown for a long weekend and stayed at my parents. I got to spend time with my parents, my siblings, my niece and nephew, and friends. We got in some quality time, some playtime (with the kids that is), lots of shopping, some good food, a high school play, and much more. It was nice to go up there for the weekend, as I haven't been there in a month or so and definitely miss my family and friends who are there.

But, Monday afternoon came and Josh flew back to PA. I was SO happy to see him again and to be back in his arms. I definitely missed him ALOT!

By the way, I was quite happy because Josh took pictures during his trip. He's not much of a picture-taking type so I was excited because I actually got to see where he was and what not. Maybe I'll post some of the pictures later.
______________________________________

Since being home, I have had a lot to do. I had a presentation and an exam at school yesterday. So I spent Monday evening spending time with Josh, studying, and preparing my presentation. Neither the presentation nor the exam seemed to go too well though. So I was pretty bummed about that. But, we'll see how they went when I get the results.

I've also been busy cleaning and doing laundry since we got home. I'm trying to get our house back into one piece and do some much needed spring cleaning. I did some today and it felt good to see a little bit of progress in the cleanliness of the house.
______________________________________

If you think of it pray for a friend of mine's aunt. Her name is Beth. She was taken to the hospital yesterday and tests discovered that she has leukemia and it is pretty advanced. They life flighted her to a better hospital because the one she was in said they couldn't do much for her. So, if you think of it please pray for her. She's only in her late 40's and has two children (both in their early 20's) and a husband. But pray for her and for the family at this time as it has come as a huge shock. Thanks!

Also, continue to pray for baby Stellan. He's in his third week in the hospital and is still in an out of SVT. He may be being transferred cross country to a hospital in Boston early next week. But continue to pray for him and his family too.
______________________________________

Well, I guess that's pretty much it for now. I'll update again later and perhaps post some pictures from both mine and Josh's weekend. But for now I'm off to cook dinner before my husband gets home from work.

Our Story - Part 3... (From Jenn's Point of View)

So I caught the bouquet. The funnier part is that Josh's younger brother, Jonny, caught the garter. We'll just say Jonny didn't get the garter very far up on my leg (that's if you consider the ankle to be part of the leg). They let Josh take over and put the garter on the rest of the way. So after catching the bouquet, we "joked" around about how I'd have to be the next one to get married. That was September.

October came and went quickly. I consistently wondered in the back of my mind when Josh was going to propose. I had a feeling it was going to happen, but in my mind there was no way he could have asked my dad yet. So, I just kept forcing the idea out of my head. We enjoyed spending time together. In October we went to one of the huge fairs not far from my school. We enjoyed walking the streets of the fair together and then watching the fair parade. It was a great time together.

Josh and I at the fair together

The next month was November. Each November the Marines have their annual Marine Corps Ball on or around November 10th to celebrate the Marine Corps birthday. It's a huge formal affair - everyone gets all dressed up, the Marines in their dress blues and the civilians in their nicest clothes. Josh asked me to be his date to the ball. I was honored. Josh's unit's 2007 ball was being held on the actual birthday, November 10th. However, Josh had to report to drill (reserve duty) the day before - Friday November 9th. I had thought that Josh had been acting kind of weird around that weekend, but I brushed it off. That Friday night, Josh was at drill and I was at a friend's house hanging out. I had texted him and said something about how I couldn't wait until we were engaged and he responded with something to the effect of "Not too long baby". I had a feeling he was telling the truth on that one, but I wasn't quite sure how soon he meant.

So the next day was the ball. A friend of mine did my hair in the morning and I got all ready. Then his mom came and picked me up and took me to their house. Josh was on his way back from his unit to pick me up from the ball. I felt bad for him. He had told me he hadn't slept well the night before and then had overslept that morning. I kept thinking that maybe it was "the day" but didn't want to get my hopes up. Anyways, I got my dress on and make-up done. Josh got his dress blues on and got all ready. Then his mom was like "hurry, hurry, we won't have enough time". I was wondering why she was hurrying us, as we were ahead of schedule and had plenty of time until we had to leave. So once we were ready his mom took what seemed like a million pictures. His brother, Jon, was also videotaping us. I found it rather odd that he was videotaping us and that his mom, dad, and brother were all there in the room watching us get pictures. I figured they were just excited for us going to the ball together.

Anyways, after what seemed like a million pictures, Josh told me that he had gotten me something and he had to go upstairs to get it. So he went upstairs and came down. He told me he had talked to my dad to see what kind of challenge coin I'd like and he had gotten me one for the ball. (A challenge coin is a commemorative coin that Marines get for different places they go and things they do, and notice he had "talked to my dad to see what kind I'd like" that was him telling me he had my parent's blessing on this) So he hands me the coin. The front of the coin looked exactly like this.

Then he said to turn it over. I turned it over and read the back and it said "Jennifer Lynn, will you marry me?" By the time I looked up from reading it Josh was on his knee with the most gorgeous ring and said "Jenn, will you marry me?". Of course I said yes. Then I laughed and hugged him and laughed and hugged him. (Laughter is my nervous reaction) Then I looked at the ring. It was a beautiful ring, with several small diamonds shaped as a heart. He told me, "Now wherever we are, even when we're apart, you'll always have my heart". That melted my heart.

After I realized what had happened, I got on the phone to tell everyone the good news. Josh says I was on the phone the entire drive to the ball (an hour and a half away). I was so excited! It was great for Josh to be able to introduce me as his fiance at the ball. We had a great time there that night and then drove back to his parent's house after the ball was over. I could barely sleep that night, as I was so excited to be engaged to the man of my dreams...
